HISTORY Malone's Bakeries was first opened in Ashley Terrace, Edinburgh in 1953. At that time rolls and confectionery were both sold on the wholesale and retail side and all the baking and delivering was done by the owner, Richard Malone. |
|
In 1962 Malone's moved premises to one shop - 115 Slateford Road. This was primarily because of the feeling that the unusual market of selling rolls in the evening through until the early morning would be better got on Slateford Road. This proved to be correct and Malone's then proceeded to buy the shop next door in 1963 - 113 Slateford Road. This shop became the retail side of the business. When Malone's moved to Slateford Road, all confectionary products were stopped and White Morning Rolls, Bran Scones and Butteries were concentrated on. The business was sold to an outsider in 1974 and in 1975 Sylvia Mason bacame a partner until 1978 when she became sole Proprietrix of R & J Malone's Bakeries, the name by which it is still known. The premises were kept the same in that 115 Slateford Road is still the original bake-house and 113 Slateford Road is still the retail shop. It was not until 1978 that the business really began to expand from just 3 roll products to gradually over 20 different kinds of roll products, sold today. The logo of "quality, service and reliability" was created and the bakery has been upgraded over the years, according to these standards. Ms Mason's daughter joined the business on a full-time capacity in 1994 and takes an active part in managing the bakery. The largest of all refurbishment's took place in 1995 over 2 weeks when the bakery was closed for the first time in 33 years, for more than 2 days. Malones's Bakeries has never changed it's trait of its unusual opening hours to the retail customer and its still known for opening from 7pm until 3am to purchase fresh rolls. The Retail shop was also expanded into a take-Away shop selling hot food and various confectionery. |
